Located at the foot of Mount Asama, the “Saison Museum of Contemporary Art” is a museum where visitors can enjoy not only contemporary art but also the gardens and architecture. Guided by the philosophy of “a place to breathe deeply with the artworks,” the museum places great importance on providing visitors with time to engage with each piece at their own pace. Highlights include the building designed by architect Kiyonori Kikutake and the garden, for which sculptor Tsutomu Wakabayashi developed the basic concept. As you stroll among the sculptures dotted throughout the garden and listen to the breeze rustling through the trees and the murmur of the stream, you can experience the landscape woven together by nature and the artworks. The café, reborn following its 2026 renovation, is another new attraction where you can enjoy the garden’s greenery up close. After viewing the exhibits, take a moment to savor organic tea and traditional Japanese sweets—served in the museum’s original multi-tiered lacquer box crafted by glass artist Peter Ivy—at the café overlooking the garden, and let the afterglow of the artworks linger. At the museum shop, you’ll also find pieces crafted with a focus on high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship. This is a place where you’ll want to visit with plenty of time to spare and simply let your senses guide you.
