Mount Asama is an active volcano straddling Nagano and Gunma prefectures and is known as one of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan. Its dynamic landscape attracts many climbers. For beginners, the route up to the outer rim of Kuromurayama (2,404 meters above sea level) is recommended. This course is a relatively gentle ascent and can be completed in about 3 hours for a round trip. Along the way, visitors can enjoy a close-up view of the majestic Mt. Asama and the changing nature of the four seasons. Especially during the fall foliage season, the colorful scenery makes a perfect photo spot.

Asama Kakushiyama (浅間隠山) is a 1,756-meter-high mountain that, as its name suggests, hides Mount Asama. The trail is quiet and serene, ideal for those who want to refresh themselves in nature. The distance from the trailhead to the summit is about 3 km, with an elevation gain of about 500 m. The round trip takes about 3 hours. From the summit, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of Mount Asama, the Northern Alps, and the Yatsugatake mountain range. By Climbing Season: Clothing and Climate Points

To enjoy mountain climbing in comfort, it is important to select clothing appropriate for each season's climate. On high elevation mountains such as Mt. Asama and Mt. Yatsugatake, the temperature difference from the base of the mountain and changes in weather must also be taken into consideration. Here are some tips on clothing and equipment for each season (spring, summer, and fall).

Spring (April-May)

Spring is a pleasant time for hiking in the mountains, but lingering snow can be seen until mid-April in higher elevation areas. Since the trails can be muddy and icy in some areas, it is safe to carry waterproof shoes and chain spikes. In the mornings and evenings, temperatures can drop close to 0°C (32°F), so we recommend wearing clothing that can be adjusted by layering with a fleece or lightweight down jacket.

Summer (June-August)

Even in the highlands, the sun is strong and temperatures can exceed 25°C during the day. Wicking innerwear, hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential. Insect repellent is also important as the course passes through grassy and marshy areas. Because of the possibility of thunderstorms in the afternoon, it is best to finish your activities in the morning. Always carry lightweight rainwear.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn, with its beautiful autumn foliage and clean air, is a comfortable season for mountain climbing. However, from October onward, the mornings and evenings become even colder, with temperatures dropping to near freezing. Be sure to pack a windbreaker, down jacket, gloves, and a knit hat to protect yourself from the cold. Especially from November onward, you need to watch out for the first snow and frost.

Sachi Tanaka, a Shinshu mountain guide and professional snowboarder, will guide you on your climb. Asama and Yatsugatake areas according to the guests' fitness and interest.

As the name suggests, this mountain “hides” Mt. It is a well-known course for those in the know, where you can enjoy both quiet mountain hiking and spectacular views.

• The summit offers a 360-degree panorama. Yatsugatake and the Northern Alps can also be seen.

1] Shirakoma Pond - Takamiseki round-trip course (approx. 3 hours) Beginners OK

This route is also recommended for first-time climbers. From Shirakoma Pond, the route passes through a mossy forest, and the last 5 minutes are a bit athletic as you climb over rocks!

• From Takamiseki, there is a magnificent view over Shirakoma Pond and the Minami Yatsugatake Mountains.
• Early in the morning, the sunrise is especially beautiful and inspiring.
• At the Takamiishi Hut, a mountain hut, the famous fried bread is very popular. Lunch is also available.

This route takes you to the 2,351-meter-high summit of "Niu" while enjoying the moss forest. This is a luxurious course that offers both a sense of accomplishment and a spectacular view.

Karuizawa Taliasen is a complex of museums, restaurants, and play facilities centered around Lake Shiozawa. A great adventure in the forest! Rising Field Karuizawa

Rising Field Karuizawa offers a one-day BBQ and athletic activities in the forest. The centerpiece of the facility is "Owl Adventure," a five-level sky athletic course that offers two different courses, including a wooden suspension bridge crossing and a zip line. Even small children can enjoy the challenge of wearing a lifeline. Some of the past challengers have been as young as 2 years old. You can try it not only in summer but also in winter when it snows. A thrilling walk in the air! Zipline Adventure Karuizawa

Zipline Adventure Karuizawa is an activity that allows visitors to enjoy walking in the air on a 615-meter-long course. There are six unique courses, with the course with the maximum length of 148 meters being the most thrilling and popular. The experience time for each course is 90 to 120 minutes. You can enjoy the exhilaration of running through nature. Enjoy hiking with a professional guide while touring the courses. The Karuizawa Prince Hotel ski resort is open from the end of April to the end of September every year.

Relax in the forest! Sengataki Seseragi no Michi

The Sengataki Seseragi Path is a hiking course along a mountain stream that connects Sengataki Falls, with a drop of approximately 20 meters, to the Sengataki Parking Lot. The trail is approximately 2.5 km round trip, with a height difference of about 80 m. It takes about 60 minutes for an adult to make the round trip. The trail is surrounded by trees, and you will hear the refreshing sounds of rustling trees and running water. Why not relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city? The trail is well-maintained, but be sure to wear sneakers or other footwear with a firm footing.

Trekking with a superb view! Mt. Kosasama

Koasama (小浅間山), located to the east of Mount Asama (浅間山), is a spot where trekking can be easily enjoyed. Ko-asama is 1,655 meters high, but it takes only about 60 minutes to reach the summit from the trailhead. The magnificent view of Mt. Asama from the summit is sure to make your trip memorable. The scenery, which changes with the seasons, from fresh greenery in spring to autumn colors in fall, is also an attraction. Trekking tours led by professional guides are available for beginners and families. On the way home, you can relax at one of the nearby hot springs.

Asama Farm Teahouse is a place where you can meet animals in a rich natural setting. Rabbits, goats, and sheep are always ready to welcome you. Enjoy the thrill of bungee jumping! Yamba Bungy

The Yamba Bungy is a thrilling experience that involves plunging from the parapet of a 45-meter-high bridge into the river. 494 meters long, the bridge is a symbol of the Yamba Dam, and its size adds to the thrill of the ride. The size of the bridge also adds to the thrill of the bungee ride. For safety reasons, participants must be at least 15 years old and weigh between 40 and 105 kg. Participants can choose between the regular bungee ride and the "water touch" ride, where they can touch the surface of the water with their hands. GoPro rentals and data are provided, making this an unforgettable experience.

Set out on an adventure in an amphibious vehicle! Yamba Gyagaten-go

The Yamba Nyagaten-go is an activity using the dam lake of the Yamba Dam, which was completed in March 2020. Visitors can board an amphibious vehicle and tour the area around the dam from both land and on the lake. The ride takes about 75 minutes. About 30 minutes of that time is spent on the water. There are five tours a day, but reservations are recommended during busy periods such as summer vacation.

Enjoy the bicycle-type trolley! Agatsuma Gorge Rail Bike Agattan

Agatsuma Gorge Rail Bike Agattan is an activity that allows visitors to experience riding on the railway tracks on a special bicycle-type trolley. The course, which utilizes part of the former JR Agatsuma Line tracks, is approximately 2.4 km one-way and offers beautiful views of the Tarusawa Tunnel, once known as the shortest railroad tunnel in Japan, and the Agatsuma Gorge, a nationally designated scenic spot. Especially in autumn, it is very popular to enjoy the scenery colored with autumn leaves. The rail bike can accommodate up to four people if auxiliary seats are used, so parents and children can ride on one bike together while talking to each other.

Konjac Park is a theme park for konjac, a traditional Japanese food. Visitors can enjoy a factory tour to learn about the manufacturing process and history of konjac, a handmade konjac experience, a souvenir corner, and a playground. The most popular dish is the "konjac buffet. About 15 kinds of konjac dishes can be enjoyed free of charge. Impressive encounters with wild animals! Gunma Safari Park

Gunma Safari Park is a nature zoo where visitors can see animals living in their natural habitat up close. The park is divided into seven zones, with Chapman zebras and eland in the "Africa Zone" and cheetahs and lions in the "Walking Safari Zone. Onioshidashien is a park where visitors can see the beauty of natural formations created by lava that flowed out during the 1783 eruption of Mount Asama. Asama Great Falls, with a drop of about 10 meters, is the largest waterfall in the northern Kanto area. The path to the waterfall leads through a beautiful forest where the sun shines through the trees. A small river flows next to the walking path, and you will feel the charm of nature to the fullest. The path is not frequented by many tourists, so it is especially recommended for those who want to take a leisurely stroll with their children. An exciting experience in nature! Rising Field

Rising Field is a facility that offers camping, bonfires, and athletic experiences in a natural setting. One of the activities, Owl Adventure, is a sky athletic designed on five levels. Visitors can put on a harness and move between the trees, and at the end of the day, they can play on a zip line. Also, for a limited season, "Night Owl Adventure" will be held, allowing visitors to play in the forest at night, so spending time with children in a different forest atmosphere will strengthen family bonds.

A must for picture book lovers! Karuizawa Picture Book Forest Art Museum

Karuizawa Picture Book Museum is a favorite place for picture book lovers to collect and exhibit rare original paintings and first editions of picture books, mainly by modern and contemporary European and American picture book artists. The museum grounds include Exhibition Halls 1, 2, and 3, the Picture Book Library, and the Picture Resource Garden, where visitors can enjoy the seasonal scenery. Visitors can enjoy seasonal special exhibitions in the second exhibition hall and a permanent exhibit of "Peter Rabbit™" in the third exhibition hall. The third exhibition hall features a permanent exhibit of "Peter Rabbit™." Rare Western books that cannot be found in bookstores in town are also on display. Piccio is a facility that offers nature tours in the Karuizawa Wild Bird Forest. Tours are offered in spring, summer, fall, and winter. Visitors can enjoy "flying flying flying squirrel watching," with a sighting rate of over 951 TP6T, and "Wild Bird Forest Nature Watching," which is held daily. The "Picchio Children's Adventure Club" for elementary school students is held during GW, summer, and spring vacations. Children participate in the tours alone, taking walks in the forest and cooking camp rice. After the tour, you may see children who have grown up to be a whole lot tougher.

Yukawa Furusato Park is 2km long!

Yugawa Furusato Park is a large park stretching approximately 2 km in length, built along the Yugawa River, a first-class river of the Shinano River system that flows through the town of Karuizawa. The spacious park has a large playground with a slide, a grassy area for picnics, and a dog run. It is ideal for children to play to their heart's content. In summer, visitors can cool off in the area where they can play in the clear waters of the Yugawa River. The Hokuriku Shinkansen bullet train tracks are located near the park, making it a great place to visit with children who like trains and vehicles.

The Yamba Tenmei Mudflow (Tenmei Deiryu) Museum, which opened in 2021, is a facility that tells the history of excavations associated with the construction of the Yamba Dam. Opened in 2009, Bakery & Restaurant Sawamura Kyukaruizawa sells a wide variety of delicious breads. Tenkuu(da)ining is a restaurant located in the あさま空山望 villa resort, which is also open to day-trippers. The attractive menu features mainly Western-style dishes such as pasta, using a variety of locally grown ingredients. On the terrace, you can also enjoy BBQ using highland vegetables and brand-name meat. All stoves and other equipment are provided, so you can use the restaurant without anything. The deck terrace has a roof and mosquito nets to repel insects, so parents and children can enjoy themselves without worrying about the weather. In March 2025, an indoor kids' corner, "Mori no chibi ko hiroba," will be newly established, offering あさま空山望 nature-themed coloring books and picture books related to Kita-Karuizawa. The oldest cafe in Karuizawa! Ganso Chikimochi Shigenoya

In business for about 350 years. The original Shigenoya is a cafe where visitors to the Kumano Imperial Shrine have stopped by over the years. Its specialty is "chikirimochi," a rice cake made from 100% glutinous rice grown in Nagano Prefecture. Anko (red bean paste), kinako (soybean flour), and sesame are all excellent, and you will have a hard time deciding what to choose.
